1 Desert City Swing + Meet Me in St Louis
I’ve just spent an amazing two weeks in Phoenix and St Louis.
Desert City Swing rocked virtually non-stop from Thursday’s start at 7.00pm with a Kyle/Sarah workshop until Monday morning. Remaining 3 days started at 10.00 am. Lots of pros, great workshops and great dancing. Free passes for all Pros and All Stars ensured a high standard of dancing and cheap hotel snacks during the event kept us going. Cheaper restaurants and supermarkets within walking distance. Wonderful location. 2 room luxury suites with fridge – water park – several swimming pools, golf. Almost half price tickets for overseas dancers which included all workshops! Event video only $50 – thank you Doug Silton. One of the best Pro Strictly + JnJ competitions I’ve ever seen. 10 out 10. Absolutely no negatives.
MMISL was also good – lots of pros even though the event was medium-sized. Great location with free shuttle from airport to hotel. Fabulous hotel with very high standard rooms. Light rail available to explore down town. (I did this during Thursday before the early bird workshop + dance.) The gender balance was good and it was one of the friendliest events I’ve ever attended. Good workshops, (all included) competitions and dancing. Free hot snacks at midnight on Friday and Saturday. Downside was a couple of fun party games which went on for too long (Event director has assured me that this will only happen once next year and at an earlier time) + the early 4.30pm Sunday finish although you could save one night’s hotel bill if you wanted to be back in the UK by Monday.
2 Visits from US Pros for October and November
24 October – The best WCS Saturday of the year, from around 10.00 am till the early hours of Sunday morning, is always REBEL YELL at H G Wells in Woking with one of our favourite top pro couples, Kyle Redd and Sarah Vann Drake at least 5 workshops with the pros (+ workshops in other dance styles) and a separate swing room upstairs with the option to dance downstairs in the main ballroom. NB This is not confirmed but I did hear a whisper that there may also be a fun JnJ competition with free passes to the New Year in Palm Springs Event!
Booking details are on the website:
www.ceroc.org.uk Full day + evening will be £45. The first 30 people who book and type the promo code AWCS will save £5 (some people experienced problems with code so call/email to confirm.) Evening tickets at £15 have just been released.
20 – 23 November - London SWINGvitational in 4 STAR COPTHORNE HOTEL NEAR HEATHROW organised by West Coast Swing UK Catriona Wiles.
Young Adults Champions: Brennar Goree & Torri Smith
All Star Pro line up: Maxence Martin (France) John Kirkconnell (Canada)
Yenni Setiawan, Nicholas King, Wendy Miller, Chuck Brown, Stacey Chiang, Edwin Lee, Courtney Adair & Jill DeMarco (USA) + Paul Warden, Catriona Wiles and Lee Easton.
Probably the largest group of All Star pros ever outside North America!
A few spaces remain for leaders. Come on guys, get booking! Those female All Stars are amazing to watch and are there to dance with you unlike most events where a dance with a pro is quite rare.
www.westcoastswing.co.uk or call Cat on 07881 641400. She may keep the early bird prices for just a few more days if you call her asap before she leaves for Boogie By the Bay. Schedule will be on the website by early next week.
3 Two Recommended New Year Events in the US
New Year’s Dancin’ Eve in Boston. WCS Pros: Angel & Debbie, Robert & Deborah, John Lindo, Bill Cameron, Paul and Catriona. Lee, Rachel McEnaney + Rob Glover will also be there for line, hip-hop, + beginner WCS workshops. Free for All-Star dancers. Various price options. Workshops extra depending on package bought. Check website for full details:
www.newyearsdancineve.com
New Year’s Swing Dance Camp in Palm Springs. Top Class Masquerade Ball + banquet (costume or formal dress). Pros: Kyle & Sarah, Jordan & Tatiana, Ronnie & Brandi, Myles and Tessa + other All-Star pros. Workshops included. Special overseas price of only $138 or only $92 without the banquet!
www.peoplewhodance.com
I’m sure both events will be great fun. Both have been recommended by other dancers. Boston has cheaper and shorter flights so probably ideal for just the weekend. The Palm Springs Event has a great package for overseas dancers and if you want to stay for a couple of extra days there are lots of things to do and see + winter sunshine!
